Presenting: Stretching the 3D model

January 17th, 2012

It isn’t often that we are asked to stretch the design envelope for a remodeling project. This project was different. In a recent article about about chic design, we included a picture of a very cool stair system which needed to be rendered.

This article shares what came of the 3D model. I am proud of how it turned out.

The joy of designing

January 11th, 2012

I enjoy making people happy. I enjoy great design. I enjoy building homes. Marry those three together, and I enjoy my work.

Recently, a client came to us and asked to see the possibilities of a unique stair system that is clear, slim, and chic for their home. This is not a typical home either. Split level entrance with a foyer that is open from basement to 2nd floor. It is also tricky because the stair is going to be supported by nothing between first and second floors, while walking out over the foyer.

So, we got looking for ideas of glass stairs…

Comeback kid-Murphy Beds

November 4th, 2011

I was recently designing a guest room and we discussed the option of a murphy bed with the owners. Crazy enough, I received an email with a link to this video. Who knew? Murphy beds are making a comeback. The Wall Street Journal even noticed with this video.

Just one quick internet search yielded this website that has some great looking murphy bed designs and options. http://www.morespaceplace.com/murphy-beds/.

Maybe you too will want to save some space in your room.

Giving back this summer

October 3rd, 2011

This summer was a busy one for us, and from what I’m hearing, so has many of yours. We had the privilege  of working at a Christian camp to help build a new structure for them to offer new opportunities for the community.

Recently, Leah Thayer, of Daily5Remodel.com ran  a story explaining how it all worked. Read Leah’s article, Remodelers Give Back … in Elizabethton, Tenn.

I’ll also point you to the camp’s Facebook page with more photos. http://www.facebook.com/doerivergorge

Fun in remodeling

August 12th, 2011

I’m going to share some common thoughts about remodeling here. You think about some one-word adjectives and see if we’re on the same page. Scary. Over-budget. Scary. Long. Headache. Scary. Dusty. Frustrating. Did I mention scary?

But what would you say if I told you remodeling could be fun? Crazy? Wait! Please hear me out.

Cutting edge

September 21st, 2010

Design Build Solutions, LLC was featured in a prominent remodeling magazine this month.  In fact, the magazine is Remodeling Magazine.  We are offering homeowners the opportunity to see what one room of their house could be, based upon their wishes and needs.  You can read about the fantasy remodeling party online.

This new offering is the American Fantasy Makeover.  Ok, it really isn’t new, we’ve been doing these for about a year, but now that it is out in the printed media, we’d like to repeat the opportunity for homeowners can see what their room can look like.

Because of technology, it is possible to remotely model and design your home, and show a client what could be.  The rules to the Makeover are simple:

It is important to remember that this is a Fantasy Makeover for a two reasons.  First, we do not qualify the dollar figures attached to the project, and, second, it is not structurally qualified.  Because we are limited to one room, we haven’t had the chance to ascertain the existing structure of the house.

Here is one testimonial.

How to remodel with ease, pt 1

September 14th, 2010

This post is first in a series, where the goal is to show how you can remodel or upgrade your home with ease.   A remodeling project isn’t always easy but it can be done with much fewer headaches.  We all know that in order to reduce headaches, one must start with the end goal in mind.  The end goal in any remodeling, or upgrading project is a trouble-free, functional, and visually pleasing space.

Start with existing conditions

To create this series, I will share this example of a real life, and real-time, remodeling project. In other words, I will be writing this as the project unfolds.

Remodeling ideas – where to turn

July 23rd, 2010

From the phone calls that have been coming, people are emerging from their cocoons looking to do some renovations to their house.  People have called about green building, kitchen remodeling, attic remodeling, deck additions, bath remodeling – you name it!  These aren’t the largest remodeling projects that have ever taken place, and that is ok. Our goal at Design Build Solutions is to provide our highest level of service to any of those projects – and there is no project too small for us.  Check out our photo gallery for some ideas of small remodeling projects

Those that are calling are looking for remodeling ideas, but they don’t want to get taken; and they definitely want to save money.  Where does one turn when looking for ideas on your home?

May I suggest that if this is you, you can turn to the American Fantasy Makeover

Try, try again

June 16th, 2010

My nemesisMy son had a friend stay overnight last night, and he brought his RipStik® to play with.  Just out of curiosity, I had to try it today.

Let me tell you that as easy as those young kids make it, it ISN’T!  I’ve seen these toys before, and often wondered how they did it – on two wheels that swivel, no less!  I fell off many times this afternoon, while my daughter and son were offering their sage advise: “Maybe if you were younger, Daddy” and “Dad, you just start by pushing off and then move your feet.”  Ah, the great wisdom of a 7 and 9 year-old!

Just another ugly ramp?

April 12th, 2010

This morning the TEAM approach came thru again.  A homeowner was so happy with the process presented to them on their pantry/entry addition, that they asked the team to look at their exterior deck.

While it was “tempting” to go with the first thought that came to our collective minds, the prognosis
