Remodeling: Where did Customer Service go?

May 4th, 2010

Homeowners have been scared of remodeling – especially lately – for many reasons, and unfortunately many good reasons!  Many of those reasons can be wrapped up into the question posed in this article: Where did Customer Service go?

The stories are sadly both atrocious and frequent.  There is the neighbor who had the case of the missing contractor.  A friend has the Family Circus visit her dining room, complete with

BIM for my home?

March 31st, 2010

I don’t know about you, but I’ve been reading a LOT about Building Information Modeling (BIM) lately.  Even Warren Buffet is talking about BIM!  It used to be that BIM was used strictly for larger corporations who were building medium to large manufacturing plants or offices. But now, people are talking about BIM for homes – yours and mine!  Does that seem odd to you?  Corporations are using this technology to save them money on their large projects.  If this technology could be used for your betterment, would that be relevant?

Tips for Project planning

September 29th, 2009
  1. observe the need (list: dark kitchen, cramped entertainment space, lack of space, etc.)
  2. figure your ability to pay. (Need to know your financial limits – not how much it will cost)
  3. hire a professional design & build team (note that the contractor is included this early in the process)
  4. decide upon your needs.  Some will be goals that would be nice, while other require extra attention, and the rest will be non-negotiable.
  5. plan the project with your team (see HotTips) – hopefully, you will be able to review the design process in a fun, and changeable, 3-dimensional, lifelike, environment.
  6. approve the project, and
  7. enjoy the finished product

Scary, Unhealthy houses

June 9th, 2009

In the recent press of information regarding the materials in our homes, we’ve all heard of “going green.”  In the interest of trying to set out the definition of that, we’ve posted this article, What is Green Remodeling Anyway. There we give a list of things to consider when selecting materials, work habits, and energy usage.

Today, I came across a poignant illustration of why material selection is important.  Consider this from the American Lung Assocation, a graphical guide to possible pollutants in your home.

I’m not trying to give you nightmares at all…just trying to consider, for myself too, the reasons to “go green”.

What is Green Remodeling anyway?

March 9th, 2009

There is a great movement in remodeling and building that is called Green Building. There are so many people talking about Green.

There are several questions that come to mind. What does Green Building mean? How do you do it? How does Green building give the homeowner an advantage?

Green building can be a very broad scope, and can be achieved in many ways.
