When talking with others – be they potential clients, friends, or a homeowner who is asking questions – one question often comes to the surface – “What is Design/Build anyway – and how does it affect me?” Don’t be alarmed, this is a common question for many people. It must be said that it isn’t your fault for the confusion. The industry has not fully defined it either.
So, here is one viewpoint from a perspective that is connected to the industry, in a supporting role.
The Design/Build process is a service delivery method that gives the client the best professional service possible. At the base of Design/Build, as opposed to other delivery methods, is the ability to pull all of the necessary trades together in an organized, efficient, and informative manner.
Some have voiced concern over accountability while using this method, but this author would argue that Design/Build gives more accountability. Keep watching in the future for more regarding accountability.
Keeping all of the trades together in the Design/Build process gives the owners a peace of mind, and convenience that no other method can. One call will solve any problem or issue. There is no need for the owner to solve the question of “who is responsible for this issue?” We’ve all heard of the building or remodeling “nightmares” right? This will eliminate those.
As mentioned earlier, this method brings organization, efficiency, and information, but all must be tied together by open communication. Aha! The key to deciphering the code of which contractor to build your project. How does the contractor communicate – specifically, how well does the contractor communicate with clients? The answer to this question will help in selecting the right design/builder.
